We have had our 2 x Nexus N7K units installed for around 7 months now and I have to say this is a solid product. The stability (as you'd expect) has been second to none for our core switching unit. We were forced to replace our previous Cat 6509 Series Core switch and having chosen Cisco previously we certainly weren't disappointed once chosen to stick with them. Admittedly these units come at a price but the stability and feature sets of the unit are more than enough to warrant the price tag. The new NX-OS code was a challenge to grasp but now I have an understanding it’s become a doddle to navigate.

A small word of advice though prior to purchasing a Nexus unit, Cisco have introduced their VDC feature into the Nexus 7009. Cisco’s VDC feature helps enable the virtualization of a single physical device in one or more logical devices, a way of logically segregating separate parts of your network. We had chosen to split our VDCs – Management – Datacentre – User Access – Test. In logically segregating the individual area you are able to create better fault isolation. This of course will require some planning. Check below for additional information.

All in all this is an extremely powerful feature rich unit which certainly has enterprise class capabilities. If you are a medium – large scale business I would highly recommend looking at the Nexus product range as a suitable option to your core networking.
